Simply put, line edits cover basic editing tasks and ask the following type of questions:  Is the sentence structure understandable?  Is the sentence correct in terms of spelling, punctuation and grammar?  Is the manuscript coherent, i.e. characters and dialogue realistic, is the timeline accurate and are there loose threads left "hanging"?

 

Creative edits include basic line edits but take it one step further to a comprehensive examination of plot, characters, dialogue, etc.  The objective in creative editing is to determine areas of weakness, e.g. in pace, narrative, characters, etc. and to provide suggestions and / or guidelines to improve the manuscript based on "problem" areas identified.
