Kaye pens an all consuming romance with Her Maine Man. When Jon meets Maddie on a small, remote island in Maine, the sparks fly, but will the secrets their families keep from them drive them apart? The novel opens with Jon learning that his mother, who has recently passed away, was going to a small island in Maine to carry on with an affair. Jon's sister, Sarah, asks Jon to go this year and break the news to his mother's lover. Jon, a desk jockey with a consulting firm, reluctantly agrees. Victor Powell, who is the mayor of Bain Island, asks his daughter, Maddie, to go a nearby island and meet his lover, since he can't due to caring for Maddie's invalid mother. Maddie reluctantly agrees. Maddie and Jon meet at the cottage, but are forced to stay under its shelter when a storm hits. They share secrets and confidences, but don't put together the real reason why they are there. Unable to reign in the combustible sparks between them, their weekend turns passionate. They agree to meet in a year, but a year might prove to be long for this couple - especially when Jon ends up staying on Maddie's island for a week because of his job. Only time will tell if the secrets their families keep will drive them apart.
Kaye's writing is easy to read and engages the reader. The plot is tight with no holes, and the story is sharp. Her characters are rich and complex. Jon is haunted by his father – a drunk who is now trying to make amends. Maddie can't connect with her mother on an emotional level. Both Jon and Maddie surprisingly find that emotional connection they're looking for with each other. Her Maine Man is sophisticated for CRR readers with several lovemaking scenes. I enjoyed it very much and I couldn't put it down.
