5 Wings

From its amusing, explosive opening in Lindsell, England in 1816, Linda Banche’s delicious Pumpkinnapper kept me enthralled.

Henry (called Hank by friends and family) Lord Grey, the reluctant hero of the story, and Emily, the redoubtable heroine, have known each other since childhood. First they were friends, then their friendship changed as they grew older and became fraught with tensions and misunderstandings. Hank hoped to woo Emily when he returned from his studies at Oxford, but found her already married. Now, when they meet again, Emily is a widow and he is determined to win her this time.

This is not easy. There are strange thieves lurking in the area who seem to have targeted Emily’s pumpkins – and at first Emily suspects Hank to be one of the thieves.

Hank is a kind, honourable man with a twinkle in his eye and a wry sense of humour. He is also wonderfully jealous of Emily’s ‘guardian’ – a goose she has called Henry. Henry seems equally jealous of Hank, which makes for many laugh-out-loud moments and predicaments, especially when the goose bites Hank in a particular place.

This is a lovely, romantic story of childhood friends and sweethearts having a true chance at adult love. The historical details, the humour, the tenderness, makes this a delightful read that I am very happy to give 5 wings.
