Jack Brandon is a marine biologist dedicated to his work, and often he overlooks the little things as well as the niceties in life. As he rushes through an airport, he collides into the down-to-earth Sara Hart. Their bags go flying, and Sara accidently picks up Jack’s black address book. When she goes to return it weeks later, the quips fly between them.

Sara’s dream is to open up a lunch deli, which she does, near the aquarium where Jack has an exhibit. She names the deli, “Turtle Soup,” inspired by Jack’s cause, which is to take care of sea turtles. Jack comes by often to have lunch, and slowly Sara worms her way into his life.

With Conner’s encouragement, (Conner is Jack’s best friend), Sara screws up the courage to overcome her fear of diving, and takes lessons with Jack. However, both are haunted by memories of losing loved ones to the sea. Can Jack and Sara put their memories behind them and forge a future together?

The story moves forward at a fast clip. Jack is an interesting character, and Danielle Thorne’s passion for the sea shines through him. Sara is the more complex character. She struggles to keep her business afloat, and it’s only after she meets Jack, that she’s inspired to deal with the tragic deaths of her parents, which has haunted her for a while. The dialogue is full of sharp barbs, and drives the story. I would have liked to have seen a bit more introspection between the characters, so as to allow them to explore their feelings a little more. Overall, Turtle Soup is an engaging read and embodies the author’s love for the sea.
