Matthew “Stone” Livingston has only recently been named the Sixth Earl of Ashford, but his young life has been scarred by war and his brother’s death. When he commissions a sculpture of his brother from a talented artist, the last thing on his mind is love – until he meets the charismatic Miss Pauline Blackburn. Unlike the other girls of the ton, her honesty and sincerity light up the room. Pauline, however, has a secret. Can she warm Stone’s heart like a sculptor warms clay to mould, or will she shatter it into a thousand pieces?
The plot is crisp, moving forward in a nice, fluid manner. Matthew is a likable hero, yet his time spent in war has made him introspective and moody. Pauline is also a likeable heroine who has to hide her artistic talent because of society’s rules. She comes across as very genuine and real. Her grit and determination are qualities that modern readers can connect with.
Shereen Vedam’s writing style captures the essence of Regency England. Her descriptions use a good economy of words. I especially liked, “Her daughter glanced away first, her cheeks delicately stained like ripe peaches.” It’s a nice visual that also hints at the honest feelings of the character. To Capture Love falls into the “sweet” category. Overall, a delightful read.
